    Slate Tile

Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from clay, shale and etc. When struck with a specialized tool in the quarry, it tends to split along the cleavage plain and form smooth flat sheets of stone which have long been used for roofing, floor tiles, and other purposes. Slate is incredibly durable and can last several hundred years, with little or no maintenance.

China has become one of the major countries exporting finished and unfinished slate because of its vast slate deposits. Slate quarries were opened in several provinces, and these quarries together produce an amazing range of slates in various colors.

Riven / Split / Cleft Slate

Natural riven stone tiles are manually 'split by hand' which produces an ideal cleft textured surface.

Most of our stone tiles are supplied as 'gauged' or 'semi-gauged' which means that it has undergone a grinding process that levels out one side of the tile creating a relatively flat surface. Once installed, the 'gauged' or 'semi-gauged' tile creates a smoother, more level floor as the thickness of each tile is fairly consistent.

    Today available slates

The quarries for the following slates are still running, so they are available today.

Old vanished slates - just for memory

The following slates are no longer available due to the exhaustion of slate resource. Showing them here is just for remembering those beauties of the old vanished slates.

    Brushed Slate

To create a brushed finish (sometimes is referred to as a leathered finish), manufacturers gently brush the stone surface until it becomes textured and appears worn-in. The brushing process closes the stone pores which helps it to become more stain resistant. A brushed finish also hides fingerprints and water spots better than a polished surface. Like a honed finish, a brushed finish dilutes the color of the stone itself.

    Honed / Matt Slate

A honing/matt process is similar to polishing, it provides a smooth, satin-like nonreflective surface.

Slate can be polished some degree to obtain a honed finish - a smooth surface to the slate, a new option other than the riven finish.

    Tumbled Slate

The most common method of 'tumbling process' is to cut the stone to the same size and place them into a rubber drum / barrel along with abrasive grit (rocks, sand etc.) and water. The tiles are literally tumbled over and over while the sand, rocks and water wear down their edges and soften their finish. Tumbled tiles not only have slightly rounded edges and corners but also a smooth and worn look.

Ashlar patterned tiles are different sized slate stones which are cut and supplied together as a set, so the user scan make use these to make a desired pattern (i.e. brick pattern, Versailles pattern). Here are some examples.

The slate pattern can be used both indoors or outdoors. More people are using the slate pattern in kitchens or main living areas. If you have an existing concrete patio, walkway or pool deck, you can install the pattern directly over it for a rich look.
